our pottery year

Today we celebrated our ninth wedding anniversary, traditionally the pottery year. Mother Nature and another round of the snowy goodness left us homebound and our celebratory dinner out rescheduled. In its place, we decided to make cake — a befitting cocoa cake (recipe here, although James has tweaked it a bit over the years) made by my beloved with a snowflake topping design by me.

In many ways this cake symbolizes for us much about our marriage and how we have been able to work our way through life’s disappointments and challenges. We have learned to take the seemingly ordinary — some sugar and flour, an egg or two, scissors and paper — and turn it into something delicious and beautiful, together. Here’s to another year of heavenly ordinary days.
